Our Clients

Austrak has long-term relationships with industry leaders in the rail and resources sectors.

Our clients include Federal and State Government departments, multinationals, major rail contractors, private rail operators and mining and resource companies.

Austrak’s clients include:

BHP Billiton Iron Ore – Pilbara WA

Austrak has supplied sleepers for BHP's Iron Ore projects since 1986. Austrak has supplied more than 700,000 sleepers and about 100 turnout bearer sets.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore Projects – Pilbara WA

Austrak has supplied sleepers and turnouts to Rio Tinto since 1987 for various projects.

Queensland Rail

Austrak’s association with Queensland Rail started in 1983, producing more than 5.5 million sleepers over this time from three factories. Austrak has been QR's sole supplier of concrete ties during this period.

The most recent contract is a new "open book alliance" style 5+5 year contract awarded in April 2006. We have also supplied QR with more than 1250 turnout bearers since 1984.

Alice Springs to Darwin Railway – ADrail NT

In 2001 ADrail contracted Austrak to design and supply approximately two million standard gauge sleepers for this new 1420km single track railway. The sleepers had to be manufactured in 16 months. The railway was constructed in some of the most remote and inhospitable parts of Australia.

National Rail Corporation – Victoria

Austrak was contracted in 1984 by National Rail Corporation to provide 280,000 standard gauge sleepers for the project, which was funded by the Commonwealth Government's "One Nation" program, to convert the broad gauge line between Melbourne and Adelaide to standard gauge.

This was the final standard gauge link between all Australian capital cities and opened for traffic in June 1995.

Mainline Upgrade Project – ARTC Victoria and NSW

In 2006 ARTC contracted Austrak to supply 1.25 million standard gauge mainline sleepers and 22,350 dual standard/broad gauge with a contract value in excess of $100 million. The contract was completed one month ahead of schedule. In February 2009 the ARTC negotiated an extension of 560,000 sleepers which was completed in December 2009.

In 2007 Vossloh Cogifer awarded Austrak about 140 turnout bearer sets valued at over $3 million to supply to ARTC for this project.

Fortescue Metals Group – Pilbara, WA

Austrak supplied the sleepers for Fortescue Metals Group’s 260km of single track railway in 2007 to 2008 to connect port facilities in Port Hedland with their new iron ore mine sites.

West Angelas Mine – Pilbara WA

Austrak was awarded the contract to manufacture 560,000 sleepers over 18 months during 2000-2001 for the new West Angelas mine in the Pilbara.

Regional Fast Rail – Victoria

The Victorian Government (through its Department of Infrastructure) undertook to upgrade key country rail lines feeding Melbourne (Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and La Trobe Valley). The railway construction work was awarded to two contractors, TAJV and RRL. These contractors, in turn, awarded design and supply of the sleepers to Austrak of 191,000 and 248,000 sleepers respectively. Sleepers were manufactured in 2003 to 2004.
