Katherine
2001 to 2003 - 600,000 sleepers/year
Two factories were built in the Northern Territory - Katherine and Tennant Creek - to manufacture 2 million sleepers for the new 1,410km rail line from Alice Springs to Darwin.
These factories were built despite overcoming logistical challenges presented by the remote localities, and limited access to skilled personnel.
The contract was awarded in April 2001. The Katherine factory was in production by November 2001, with sleepers produced at a rate of 12,500 per week (nearly 600,000 per year).
Fast-tracking the construction of the factories as well as accelerating the rate of sleeper production has allowed the project to be completed three months ahead of schedule.
