Austrak Rockhampton achieves a DIFR of 0

On Sunday 30 June Austrak’s Rockhampton Factory achieved a significant safety milestone, with the Disabling Incident Frequency Rate (DIFR) reaching 0.

The DIFR achievement was achieved over a period of more than two years, in which peak workforce numbers of more than 70 people were inducted through Laing O’Rourke’s safety campaign Mission Zero.

Operations Manager Kees Breel said that this was truly an achievement to be proud of.

“We have embedded a way of thinking and doing that supports individual and team safety at all times, said Kees.

“A DIFR rate of 0 was achieved through the efforts of the entire team and not just the management and safety teams.”

Through education, improved training and working together to achieve best practices the team has eliminated disabling injuries from their operations.

A key factor in achieving a DIFR of 0 is Mission Zero’s Hazard and Near Miss campaign, centred around ensuring every employee knows the importance of spotting a hazard or near miss and then taking the necessary action to report it.

A significant increase in Hazard and Near Miss reporting over the last 12 months has had a direct effect on the DIFR:

· July 2011 to June 2012 – 28 hazards and near misses reported

· July 2012 to June 2013 – 761 hazards and near misses reported

The team will continue to create a safety culture that supports incident and injury free working, with a focus on maintaining their fantastic safety record.
